Listen to The Executive Flow podcast – LISTEN HERE
In March, Liam Plunkett joined Subbu Ramalingam on the podcast, “The Executive Flow”. A podcast in which Subbu delves into topics with his guests surrounding the world of leadership and entrepreneurship.
Liam had been asked to come on the podcast to discuss his mindset, routine and journey that he had taken throughout his life.
Early Life
Liam opens the podcast by reflecting on his early challenges in cricket, a time when Liam was a young player for Durham and the path forward seemed uncertain. Everything changed when Yorkshire Cricket gave him the break he needed. Under the guidance of former Australian pace bowler Jason Gillespie, Liam focused on developing his speed and refining his craft. His hard work paid off, leading to two County Championship titles and six memorable years with Yorkshire, a period he describes as truly transformative.
World Cup Winner
He then talks about his first experience playing in the T20 World Cup, in 2015, losing in a heartbreaking final to the West Indies, this then drove Liam and the rest of the England squad to bounce back in the 2019 final playing at the home of cricket, Lords. England won this dramatic final against New Zealand in a super over, in what would be a fitting end to Liam’s last appearance for England Cricket.
Relationship with Coaching and LPC
Plunkett then delves into his evolving relationship with coaching, shaped by contrasting experiences at Durham and Yorkshire. At Durham, as a young player just breaking into the professional game, he was met with a strict and disciplined coaching style, something he now understands as necessary for his development at that stage. In contrast, his time at Yorkshire marked a turning point. Liam was now a senior figure in the squad, he was treated with greater trust and respect by the coaching staff, as they emphasised that now his experience meant he could take a leadership role within the team.
After Liam had finished playing cricket on the international stage, he made the move to the United States, living in Philadelphia with his wife and playing his last few years of cricket in Major League Cricket. When asked about what life looks life for Liam currently, Liam talks about our platform Liam Plunkett Cricket with the goal of mentoring coaches and raising the overall standard of coaching across the country. In addition to working with coaches, LPC now offers tailored courses for rookie players, helping to grow the game from the grassroots up.
