Liam Plunkett spoke passionately on the CP24 breakfast radio show about his involvement in a new youth cricket program, launching in Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. This exciting grassroots program aims to grow participation in the sport nationwide. It will consist of a one-day camp in which 100 kids will be taught hands on cricket by international coaches.
The ’TD young wickets cricket program’ will be completely free, giving the participants a chance to try cricket with no financial cost.
In the interview Liam talks about the fact there is so much excitement around cricket in Canada and that he can’t wait to start the journey of growing the sport in that region. He emphasized that, above all, he just wants the kids to show up and enjoy the game. Because developing cricket skills takes time and won't happen overnight, he sees this initiative as a meaningful first step in the right direction.
Mitch Sharma, senior manager of sports sponsorships at TD bank, conveys that his company have backed the program because cricket is “one of the fastest growing sports in the world, let alone in Canada” and that “TD wants to use cricket to bring communities together”. He goes on to speak about the fact that Canada has five million people that love cricket and the country needs to work out how they can tap into that fandom. He emphases that “Using ambassadors like Liam…” can unlock a huge pipeline of cricket talent in Canada that has not been tapped into.
